How AI answer engines choose their sources
I study how AI answer engines choose, cite, and represent sources, and what that means for brands that want to be found in them. The work is independent, built on real query data, and set up so it can be repeated.

Cited but Not Clicked
Evidence from a cryptocurrency exchange on the value-capture gap in Generative Engine Optimization
AI answer engines can cite a brand without sending it traffic. This paper looks at that gap using data from a crypto exchange: what being cited is worth compared with being clicked.
- In progress, Confirmation stage
GEO Benchmark
Which retrieved sources do AI answer engines actually cite?
A follow-up to the paper, focused on the citation side. For each query, the benchmark records the sources an answer engine retrieves and the subset it ends up citing, then tests what separates the two.
- Scraper built on the Perplexity Agent API, with the first full run pushed to GitHub.
- Exploratory runs used 84 queries drawn from Search Console data, competitor keyword files, and autocomplete research. Domains in the top 60 cited were labeled by type.
- Hypotheses (H1 to H6b) and a 153-query confirmation set were committed before any confirmation run. Two confirmation runs are complete and the analysis script was run once as specified.
- Next: a second confirmation round, run as a new round with queries from real tools (Google Autocomplete and People Also Ask) in place of drafted ones, and a gradient-boosted classifier that predicts whether a retrieved source gets cited.
- Click data is planned as a later extension. The first paper covers citation only.
- Design stage, Pilot planned
Attribution Fidelity Study
When an answer engine cites a page, does its summary match the page?
A separate study of faithfulness. It compares what an answer engine says a source claims with what the source actually says, using only the source page and the engine output.
- Pilot on Perplexity first, then ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews once the pipeline and scoring rubric are validated.
- Each summary is scored as entailed, neutral, or contradicted by the source, with severity tagged separately.
- Queries come from existing public datasets, sampled across a grid of domain and intent. It is not limited to crypto and does not reuse the GEO Benchmark queries.
How I run the work
- Hypotheses first
- For the benchmark, hypotheses and the confirmation query set were committed before the confirmation runs, so the analysis cannot drift toward whatever looks good afterward.
- Real queries
- Query sets come from Search Console, keyword tools, and public datasets. Drafted queries are treated as a limitation, not a default.
- Open code
- Scrapers and analysis scripts live on GitHub so the runs can be repeated.
